While I Enjoy Helping People Become Their Best Selves, I Also Enjoy Applying Theories and Principles of Psychology to Issues Within the Criminal Justice system. Melvis Asongwed, PhDc, LCSW-C, MSW, MS, Has Extensive Experience in Psychotherapy, Forensic Social Work, and Forensic Psychology, With Demonstrated Skills in Comprehensive Assessment and Diagnosis of Mental Health Conditions, Developing Treatment Plans, Providing Counseling and Psychotherapeutic Services, Providing Expert Testimony in Criminal Proceedings, Conducting Psychosocial Evaluations for Mitigation Purposes, Assessing and Linking Clients to Evidence-based Services and Integrating Services Into Pretrial, Sentencing, or Alternative Sentencing Plans.
In Her Early College Years, She Recognized That Combining Mental Health and Forensic Psychology Would Be a Fulfilling Career, Given Her Passion for Serving Individuals, Families, Groups, and Communities. She Believes That Her Genuinely Curious and Attentive Approach is Key to Developing a True Connection in the Fields of Mental Health and Forensic Psychology and Creating a Collaborative Relationship With Those She Serves. Compassion, Dedication, and Empathy Are the Foundations of Her Practice.
Melvis Began Providing Psychotherapy in 2019, Mainly Working With Children, Adolescents, and Adults With a Wide Range of Mental Health Conditions in Individual, Family, and Group Settings.
She Has Experience Working With Individuals Struggling With Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Trauma, and Stress-Related Disorders, Trauma Related to Adverse Childhood Experiences, Ptsd, Adjustment Disorders, School Related Issues, Grief/loss, Cultural and Racial Issues, Peer and Family Conflicts, and Some Personality Disorders. Melvis Has Considerable Experience Assisting Parents in Negotiating Difficulties They May Face With Children Who Struggle With Behavioral Issues. She is a Dependable Asset to the Fields of Social Work, Psychology, and Mental Health. She Does Not Waiver in Her Contribution and Commitment to Her Clients as She is Always Ready to Help Her Clients Achieve Their Goals. She is a Quick Study With a Dedication to Keep Learning and Improving on What She Knows. Being Highly Organized and Detail-oriented Makes It Easier to Manage Her Own Time for the Success of the Individuals She Serves. In Addition to Her Experience, Melvis Has Strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills That Allow Her to Adapt to Any Situation.
In Addition, Melvis Has Significant Experience in Forensic Social Work and in Forensic Psychology, Including the Application of Psychosocial Theories in the Legal System, Testifying as an Expert Witness in Juvenile and Criminal Proceedings, Conducting Psychosocial Evaluations for Mitigation Purposes (in Juvenile Cases, Adult District and Circuit Court Cases, and Post Convictions) Assessing and Linking Clients to Evidence-based Services and Integrating Services Into Pretrial, Sentencing, or Alternative Sentencing Plans. Additionally, Melvis Has Served as a Field Instructor for the University of Maryland School of Social Work, Since 2019. Her Unique Combination of Education, Skills and Work Experience Has Allowed Her to Develop Strengths in Developing Treatment Plans and Implementing Interventions That Are Informed and Most Importantly Client Oriented. Because of Her Varied Background, She is a Resourceful and Creative Problem Solver.
